Introduction

Mission

Hospice is a comprehensive Palliative Health Care Programme for persons living with a terminal illness and their families. Helderberg Hospice strives to empower families by giving them an opportunity to share actively in the care, comfort and support of the dying patient. Hospice affirms life. Hospice neither hastens nor postpones death. Death is seen as a natural part of life. We encourage patients to live full and comfortable lives through the management of pain and symptom control. Helderberg Hospice aims to provide a holistic and individualised palliative care service to all residents of the Helderberg area who require such a service, irrespective of their ability to pay for that service.

World Health Organization (WHO) definition of Palliative Care

Palliative Care is the active, total care of patients whose disease is not responsive to curative treatment. Control of pain, or other symptoms, and of psychological, social and spiritual problems is paramount. The goal of palliative care is achievement of the best possible quality of life for patients and their families. Many aspects of Palliative Care are also applicable earlier in the course of illness, in conjunction with anti-cancer treatment.
