Headline: CYCLING FOR LIFE!
Date: 2010-08-26
The Cycling for Life challenge held on Saturday 22 May 2010 at Lourensford Wine Estate in Somerset West was a huge success. Fourteen teams of sponsored cyclists on trainers linked to speedometers, competed against each other to clock up the most kilometres in the allotted 12 hours. It was a day of sweat, toil and commitment for the cyclists - and lots of fun for the spectators. The cyclists were kept at it by the pumping sounds of DJ Gorge (Paul Williams) and the well-known local band, Session, who were a drawcard for the afternoon crowd. Powered by Appletiser and energy drinks, the cyclists kept at it, even managing to do the actions to YMCA shortly before the end of the day's pedalling!

The cyclists and those who did half hour stints on the exercise bicycle and treadmill brought in more than R100 000 and proved that their strength and endurance were matched only by their big hearts for Hospice. The winning team from Somerset Radio and Security clocked up an incredible 597 km, closely followed by Team Bluwater who were a mere 6 km behind them. Congratulations to Sholto Douglas, Paul Hartman and Dom Willis for their winning effort. Special thanks to all the sponsors for the day, including Multichoice, Bobby Bennet, Appletiser, the Somerset West Round Table and Helderberg Sunrise Rotary. The day would not have been possible without the dedicated support and technical skill of Paul and Natalie Williams who worked many hours to make this day the fun and financial success that it was. Pictured here are the band Session who gave their musical talents to entertain the crowds as a gift to Hospice.

Sholto Douglas spoke about the event on Radio Helderberg 93.6 FM on Friday 18 June 2010 at 11h30. His prize for winning the Challenge includes a half page advertisement in the District Mail, 17 June 2010, and a 10 minute interview on Radio Helderberg to talk about his business. Bobby Bennett from Helderberg Audio Video was on air on 93.6 FM on Monday 21 June at 11h30 to talk about his role in providing big screen TV's for the event.
Listen out for Neil Hobkirk, Marketing Director for Appletiser, who will speak about his company's role in supporting the event, on Radio Helderberg soon.
