Volunteers play an integral role in the service of care provided by the Hospice movement worldwide, and certainly so at Helderberg Hospice. There are about 250 volunteers involved in various aspects of care and support at our Hospice, all of them trained and willing to give freely of their time, talents and energy to extend the service provided by the professional staff. There are many areas in which volunteers can become involved - from direct care with patients as caregivers either at home or at Day Hospice, fundraising, keeping the garden and buildings at Hospice House well maintained or in keeping the wheels turning smoothly at the Reception desk.

Helderberg Hospice makes a point of thanking these volunteers on a regular basis, usually in the form of an Appreciation Lunch - which is when the Catering Committee is definitely appreciated! Recently, it was the turn of the Maintenance and Caregiver teams to be made to feel really special. The Day Hospice lounge was transformed into a gourmet restaurant where 16 volunteers and a few staff members enjoyed a heart-warming sherry as starter to an excellent lunch of soups, bread and patés. The ultimate in comfort food, apple crumble and custard, provided a fitting finish to a meal to thank those who help provide comfort and care, directly and indirectly, to our patients.

Each volunteer received a handmade bookmark reminding them of the difference their kindness makes to those who receive care from Helderberg Hospice. Thank you, our special volunteers!
